Creatures (PC CD-ROM, 1996) — CyberLife, Millennium Interactive, Warner

About the game: A pioneering artificial life simulation designed by Steve Grand at CyberLife Technology (trading as Millennium Interactive), published by Warner Interactive Europe in 1996. The player hatches and raises furry creatures called Norns, teaching them to survive, speak, and defend themselves against Grendels. It was the first popular application of machine learning in an interactive simulation, with Norns driven by neural networks, genetics and simulated biochemistry rather than scripted behavior. Trivia: zoologist Richard Dawkins called it 'a quantum leap in the development of artificial life'; it won an EMMA Award in 1996.
