Outpost (1994) — PC Big Box, Sierra

About the game: Sierra On-Line's ambitious hard science fiction colony simulation, designed by Bruce Balfour, a former NASA Ames Research Center scientist from the Space Sciences Division. After the asteroid Vulcan's Hammer wipes out nearly all life on Earth, the player leads humanity's last colony mission to a distant planet, balancing terraforming, robotics, genetic research and resource mining, all grounded in actual NASA research on planetary science and interstellar spacecraft design. It was hyped as the most comprehensive strategy simulation ever developed for the PC, but famously shipped unfinished and buggy in 1994, later patched up in the v1.5 CD-ROM release, and Rock Paper Shotgun still calls it a beautiful failure. A loosely related sequel, Outpost 2: Divided Destiny, followed.
